Mother Goose

Mother Goose originated in an 1806 pantomime by Thomas John Dibdin titled, The Golden Egg, which combined the Commedia dell'arte tradition and other folk elements with fable. Folk elements in the story made a witch-figure of Mother Goose, showing her raising a storm and flying a gander. A new Mother Goose pantomime was written in 1902, where the poor but happy Mother Goose is tempted with wealth by the Devil. This version was the origin of contemporary pantomimes and adaptations of Mother Goose.

Original candlestick figure developed from a range of historical sources. Handbuilt in terracotta, with hand coloured painted sprig decoration and spot gloss transparent glaze.
