White earthenware tile, hand painted using underglaze colours with a transparent gloss glaze..
13cm x 16.5cm
This tile is from an ongoing series of hand painted tiles inspired by the 'envelope poems' of the poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886).
Emily Dickinson reused scraps and backs of envelopes to work out her finished poems. These fragments of paper are filled with words, crossing-outs, spaces and gaps. The tiles in this series mimic the shapes of the paper pieces - often an envelope opened flat. The painted images on the tiles are taken from the words of a particular poem on a particular envelope.
